In this age of medical miracles, the loss of a limb doesn't have to be as catastrophic as it once was. If you're not rich, you might have to settle for something more primitive.

And if you're a poor man from Guanmashan, Jilin province, northern China, you might have to depend on your own ingenuity. Sun Jifa was preparing to go fishing when his tackle exploded.

He had been preparing a bomb for blast fishing, but it went off prematurely. He lost both hands in the explosion.

He couldn't afford the prosthetic hands that the hospital wanted to sell him, and he needed his hands to work on the family farm.

So Sun Jifa spent the next eight years making his own.

He finally created a pair of metal hands which can grip and hold due to a series of wires and pulleys inside the shell. "I control them with movements from my elbows and I can work, love normally and feed myself just like anyone else." said Sun.

"The only drawback is that steel is quite heavy so they're tiring to wear and get hot or cold in the extremes of summer and winter."

Sun could have completed the fabrication much sooner if he had hands.

We applaud his persistence and ingenuity, and can only wonder what he'd come up with if he had been carrying the bomb on his lap when it exploded.
