No Visa? Carry On.

by on Jul.15, 2012, under Crime, Family, Kids, Parenting

An Egyptian couple arrived at Sharjah International Airport in the UAE on a Friday evening with their five-month-old baby. They were refused entrance because they didn't have a visa for the baby. So they didn't have to immediately return to Egypt, airport authorities allowed them to stay until the visa office opened on Sunday. On Sunday, after a new security shift had started, the couple thought to avoid the red tape and simply carry their infant along with them. They stuffed their baby into a bag and sent it through the x-ray machine. Security staff noticed a suspicious image. It was determined that the child was not dangerous, but his parents were arrested and charged with endangering the baby's life, because of exposure to radiation. A Sharjah police official commented, "This machine is very dangerous for anyone, let alone a baby in a bag to pass through. A case will now be raised against the mother and father, they both have visas to come to the UAE, but they have put the life of their child at risk."

Exposure to radiation leads to serious side effects in children, including an eerie glow.

Like other commodities, some people will pay a premium for something that's rare and special. Hok Kuen Chow, 28, a Briton born in Hong Kong of Taiwanese parents, was arrested in Bangkok, Thailand after police were tipped off. He was arrested after his luggage was inspected and he was found to be carrying illegal merchandise. Chow is suspected of trying to smuggle the fetuses, which range from two to seven months, to Taiwan to sell to wealthy buyers. The bodies, which had been oven dried and painted in gold leaf, had been purchased by Chow for 200,000 baht - about $ 6325. Some people believe that the fetuses bring good fortune, and wealthy clients would pay six times what they were originally purchased for. The bodies also had a variety of religious tattoos and ornamentation. Although authorities are uncertain where the fetuses came from, it's possible they had undergone the Thai ritual "Kuman Thong", in which unwanted babies are surgically removed from their mother’s womb before being subjected to a ceremonial ritual. Chow faces one year in prison and a 2,000 baht ($ 50)  fine if he is found guilty. .

Eight Birds In The Hand

by on Sep.28, 2011, under Animals, Crime

The nearby passengers on the flight to Rochambeau airport in Cayenne, French Guinea, probably noticed the man fidgeting with his crotch and assumed he was merely masturbating. But alert customs officers observed the Dutch passenger's party in his pants and detained him. The customs officers removed his underwear and didn't just get a look at his pecker. They found sixteen of them, attached to hummingbirds lining the front. The birds did not appear to be sedated, accounting for some of the movement in his pants. The hummingbirds were wrapped in cloth and taped to pouches in the smuggler's briefs. The man has a previous conviction for attempting to smuggle birds, and was arrested.

Smuggling Over The Back Roads

by on Sep.17, 2011, under Crime, Drugs, Health

Swallowing packets of drugs to smuggle them through customs is an old technique. In 2009 Fidelis Ozouli was caught smuggling 1 kg of cocaine inside of condoms. Customs officials at Manchester Airport were suspicious because he looked unnaturally bloated. Ozouli claimed, "I didn't know they were drugs. I just did not know what they were. I thought I was swallowing something else to take into Britain as a favor for a pal." A man suspected to be Nigerian with a forged Irish passport appeared nervous when he tried to board a plane to Brussels from Sao Paolo, Brazil. The man was taken to a nearby hospital for colorful snapshots of his visit abroad. The 72 capsules contained about a kilo of cocaine. The man, identified only as P.B.B., has been charged with international drug trafficking.
