Sticky Fingers

by on Jan.30, 2013, under Crime, Culture, Health, Racism, Religion, War and Terrorism

In some Muslim countries, citizens are subject to Sharia law and are frequently punished severely for crimes. Amputation, whipping, and death by stoning are options even for relatively minor crimes.

The privilege of carrying out the punishments also carries the burden of the effort. Throwing softball-size rocks and wielding a whip are exhausting activities especially while you're trying to impress a crowd.

No Muslim is safe from punishment. Even women and children are subject.

Muslims already have public relations problems with the Western world over these primitive methods. And Iran is showcasing its developing technology by adding a modern touch to the process.

By fabricating a few additions, these ordinary machine-shop items can be turned into a multiple finger amputation machine, no axe or machete necessary.

The candidate-for-rehabilitation is led to the machine by hooded figures where his hand is held down by a toggle clamp attached to a metal plate.

Several people assist in the project. Two hold down the blindfolded prisoner while another turns the crank that lowers the saw blade, severing four fingers.

shariasaw4aFor the crowd's entertainment, the bloody hand is held up for view, then dipped in iodine to reduce the chance of infection and make sure that the prisoner can still sense intense pain.

The man was found guilty of theft and adultery by a court in Shiraz.

With modern innovations like this, accidents like the one above can be avoided.

Subtraction With Fingers and Toes

by on Jul.26, 2011, under Health, Kids

We previously wrote about a polydactyl Chinese boy who had a total of 31 fingers and toes. An even number is better, but at least it was a world record. Akshat Saxena, from Uttar Pradesh, northern India, was born with a record shattering 34 digits, mostly fingers and toes. In all he had seven fingers on each hand and ten toes on each foot; but no thumbs. Akshat has since had the extra digits removed, and doctors are trying to fashion thumbs out of the amputated fingers. His mother, Amrita, said she was "shocked and surprised" when she first saw her newborn's extra features. Then she learned that Akshat had broken the world record for the child with the most fingers and toes. Amrita said a friend told her that Akshat was special. She said, "He read on the internet about the baby born in China. Then he said that my boy has broken the record of having 34 fingers. At first I was not convinced at all. It was hard to believe that my son has broken the record. But later, he along with my husband and younger sister registered the data on the internet."

The Digital Age

by on Jun.15, 2010, under Health, Kids

It's been suggested that we use base 10 arithmetic because we have ten fingers and ten toes, making it natural to count that way.  Sadly, this young Chinese boy afflicted with Polydactyly, will have to depend on his natural intelligence. In all, this 6-year-old boy, from the city of Shenyang in China's northeastern Liaoning province, has a total of 31 fingers and toes - 16 toes, and 15 fingers.  Three fingers on each hand are fused together. His condition is especially rare, as it usually affects the outer fingers and toes.  Surgeons expect to remove the extra digits.
