by on Sep.07, 2014, under Crime, Culture, Education, Family, Kids, Weapons

Ten year old Tang Chu, who lives in Ghizhou, China was trying to watch his favorite cartoons when he became annoyed by a noise from outside. Tang_Chu_apt Workman Liu Mai was using his electric drill to install new lights outside the 8th floor apartment. While most ten year olds would probably be driven by curiosity, Tang Chu just wanted to stop the noise. He grabbed a knife from the kitchen, and cut the workman's safety rope. That left him dangling 100 feet up by a single rope. His workmate Zhang Pan heard his screams, and called firemen, who were able to winch Liu Mai to safety on the 11th floor. liumai2 Tang Chu said that the builders were too loud and it was distracting him as he tried to watch his favorite cartoons. He has since apologized for his actions. Father Tang Peng said, "He just didn't think. We have apologized and bought the man a new rope." liumai3 "We also gave him a good talking too and explained what he did was very dangerous. "He has promised he will not do something similar again. I think we may also need to take him for some anger management therapy." Just make sure the therapist keeps his voice down.

Cutting Corners

by on Aug.10, 2014, under Culture, Games, Recreation

The Tonghe County Stadium in northeastern China’s Heilongjiang province had been undergoing renovation, and was behind schedule. tonghe_stadium With time running out for finishing the 10,000 square foot stadium, and an impending inspection by provincial leaders and Communist Party officials, the project managers cut a few corners. tonghe_track3 The oval track had already been finished, except for the surface marking. Figuring out how to lay out concentric ovals requires math. tonghe_track1 So they laid out the track as a rectangle, with 90 degree corners. “In order to get it ready for the leaders, we painted it like that,” one of the stadium managers said. “We think it is ugly too but if the leaders don’t ask us to change it, what are we supposed to do?” tongue_track2 The innovative layout hasn't been popular with the public. “It’s impossible to run on such a surface,” said long distance runner Zhang Yong. He went on to  call the track a disgrace to the sport of running.

Crash Test Dummy

Safety wasn't a major consideration for vehicle manufacturers until 1966, when the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards was passed into law. There really was no way to tell how safe a vehicle was... until the situation occurred.

Survivability wasn't a consideration. You just had to look out. truck-demolishes-a-car-in-waltham Recently, two horrendous-looking crashes involving Lamborghini automobiles have been in the news. Witnesses described the cars in both cases as having "split in half" on impact. la8 It looks like a severe crash like that could be fatal. OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAYou get more than style when you spend $ 400,000 on a vehicle. la4 While it might look bad for the car, the passenger is protected by the Lamborghini Aventador's monocoque, a carbon fiber cage surrounding the interior. lambocageIt's a high-tech mobile safety cocoon for the rich. Most of drive more ordinary vehicles, which, while safer than ever, still require some common sense. sc1 At the very least, you need to use your seatbelt. sc2 When the car, driving in Guanxi province in China, hit the back of a truck, the passenger, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was propelled through the windshield. sc3 She watched as rescue crews first remove the unconscious driver from the car. sc4 Then they enlarged the hole and extracted her from the windshield. If you really value your safety on the road, then you should be driving the Lamborghini Aventador.

Tales of Woe

by on Sep.28, 2013, under Health, Kids, Nature

In the early stages of development of a human embryo, there's a tail-like structure. This tail measures about 1/6th the size of the entire length of the embryo (the equivalent of a 12-inch tail on a 6-foot man). But as the fetus develops, the tail is absorbed. Enzymes dissolve the bones, and the entire structure retracts into the fetus's body. If something goes wrong in the process, the tail may continue to grow. tail02 The baby is normal overall. But it has a tail and will probably grow up to be evil. Human baby with a tail The tail is a "caudal appendage", basically a vestigial muscle. It can be removed surgically. tail_DRAWIf left intact, it may continue to grow along with the rest of the body. tail01 Unlucky Xiao Wei is a seven month old boy from Guangdong, China. He was born with a large tail, and surgeons can't remove it. xiaowei2 Wei was born with myelomeningocele, a variant of spinal bifida. Spina bifida, or split spine is a fault in the development of the spine and spinal cord which leaves a gap in the spine. Myelomeningocele spina bifida causes the spinal column to remain open allowing the membranes and spinal cord push out to create a sac in the baby’s back. This sometimes leaves the nervous system vulnerable to infections that may be fatal. xiaowei1 Even when the tail can be surgically removed, the nervous system will probably already be permanently damaged, resulting in a range of symptoms, including paralysis and incontinence. xiaowei3 Chinese doctors say the growth at the base of Wei's spine has been caused by damage to the outer wall of the child's spinal canal. Surgeon Huang Chuanping reported, "Wei's growth is quite well developed and now measures some 10 centimeters. If we cut it off it will simply grow again. We need to repair the spinal canal first to stop it reoccurring."

You never know what a kid might flush down. drain_toys The plumbing was particularly noisy in one building in Jinhua in the coastal province of Zhejiang when residents reported the sound of a baby crying. She had been carrying a screwdriver, possibly in anticipation of applying for a job at FoxConn when she turns five. jiali34 She fell with enough force to drive the screwdriver into her nose where it stopped just below the eye socket. jiali2 It barely missed the brain. At the first two hospitals she visited, doctors were uncertain they could remove it safely. jiali5 Although we're not sure just what his past experiences entailed, this wasn't the first time Chief Surgeon Yu Qin has removed household objects from children's faces.

Back Inside

by on Nov.19, 2012, under Health, Kids

It would be pretty hard to get through life with your less-developed twin on your back. We discussed Fetus in fetu in a previous article, Something Inside. Fetus in fetu is found in the abdomen 80% of the time, and infrequently in the skull. In this one-in-five-million case, an eleven year old girl in China was admitted to a hospital to check on the third arm that was sprouting from her back. The back x-ray disclosed an abnormal curvature of the spine, and a few additional bones. They consisted of a breast, arm with shoulder blade, and two fingers. This is the first time this condition has been documented in the back. The parasitic twin was mostly removed by surgery but the girl's problems aren't over. In a necropsy, analysis revealed digestive tract lining in the tissue. And she suffers from diastematomyelia, which is a congenital disorder in which the spinal cord is split.
