Body modification has been a tradition for some people for hundreds of years. The Padaung, in Burma, are part of the Karen Lahwi ethnic group. Padaung01 From an early age, the women wear rings, with more added periodically to make their necks longer. Padaung02 A long neck is considered by the group to be a sign of beauty. Paduang03 Their dedication to the tradition continues so they can be the most beautiful women of the tribe. Stretching and ritual scarification are seen as a form of initiation into adulthood; expression of art; or it may distinguish a village or tribe. scar_ethiopa01 In Djougou, Benin, tribal scars are displayed proudly. They aren't just for tribal identity. They also convey personal information. scar05 They need to be done at a young age, but due to their importance, the kids are anxious to get it done. Circumcision is another popular body modification. It signifies that a boy is a full-fledged adult member of a tribe, with the accompanying privileges, such as hunting, becoming a warrior, and taking a wife. The Ndebele, a bantu-speaking tribe from South Africa and Zimbabwe, has a two month circumcision ritual, during which each boy receives a tribal name that identifies him for life. ukuwela The Xhosa smear the lucky man with mud after the ritual is complete to insure that he will turn the color of manhood. Dead of Night

Politics make strange bedfellows, and so does a successful marriage. When Marcel H died at the age of 79, his 69 year old widow was devastated. She wanted him to remain at her side, so she didn't report the death. marcelh01 It is believed that he died from an asthma attack in November 2012. His doting wife continued to sleep with the corpse despite the smell of decomposition. marcelh02 Neighbors didn't report any unusual odors, but authorities were called after the landlord claimed that the couple hadn't paid their rent since 2012. When they entered the apartment, they found Marcel's mummified remains. marcelh03 Philippe Boxho, pathologist at the Forensic Center of Liege explained,“A body can mummify in a dry, warm environment. It takes at least a week to reach such a state. In this case the body had rotten in the bed and his internal organs had melted and liquefied.” marcelh04 “This liquid would have spread and the bed would have been swarming with insects as the body rotted, this would have been a real shame. Even though the smell of human decay is quite specific, many people equate that smell to the smell of garbage and once the body has become rotten the smell does decrease significantly.” death_maiden “This is not the first time I have made a discovery of this kind, I've been faced with two or three other occasions where people have continued to sleep with the corpse of their partner.” said Boxho.

These Are a Few Of My Favorite Things

When you come across a pile of bodies, it's only natural to wonder about them. What kinds of families cherished them? What fantastic places did they travel to? What parts did they contribute after their demise? According to a research report released by the Mozambican Human Rights League in partnership with Childline South Africa in Durban, the most sought-after human body part for use in harmful traditional practices, including witchcraft, in South Africa and Mozambique are the male genitalia.

The study also found South Africa had created a market for body parts trafficked from Mozambique. At least one mutilation occurred in both countries every two weeks during the 14 months of the study between 2008 and 2010. Male and female genitalia, tongues, ears, heads and breasts were among the body parts that topped the list of those most sought after in the two countries. The research concluded that body parts were trafficked regularly and organs often taken from victims while they were alive or directly after they had been murdered. Many participants in the research believed the body parts were to be sold or used for activities relating to witchcraft, muti (medicine) or harmful traditional practices. “The belief was that the use of body parts in muti was to create powerful traditional medicine based partly on human body parts,” said Fellows.

Body Piercing

by on Mar.10, 2011, under Health, Kids, Recreation, Toys

Chances are good your neighborhood pub has a dartboard. It's one of the most popular pub games in the world. People who are drinking shouldn't be driving, and it's good to keep active with sports. So darts is ideal for bar patrons, keeping them off the streets and providing healthy exercise.

Beer and darts aren't always a good mix and sometimes there are accidents.

They're not always as traumatic as a dart bus accident.

But they can still be painful.

With simple safety precautions, nobody has to get hurt.

An unskilled player should be closely supervised.

The consequences can be unpleasant.

A ten-year-old child was playing darts with his older brother. He went to retrieve his throw from the dartboard when an errant toss struck him above the right eye.

His only complaint was the pain in the area associated with the dart. The patient’s extraocular motion and visual acuity were intact. Sensation of the supraorbital and supratrochlear branches of the trigeminal nerve was also intact. Plain films and computerized tomography of the head were obtained and revealed an absence of intracranial penetration.

The inner cortex of the frontal bone was intact. The dart was removed in the emergency department.

His recovery was "unremarkable", so we have nothing more to say about it.

What’s In The Wheelie Bin?

by on Aug.25, 2010, under Animals, Crime

The new occupants were moving into the semi-detached house in Cobham, Surrey when they noticed a human foot protruding from the wheelie bin (I know, it's a British term, but I like it) in front of the house.  The body had probably been there at least three weeks, since the previous resident had moved away. The former occupant, Peter Wallner, moved to the house on Hamilton Avenue four years ago with his wife Melanie. The couple reportedly broke up two years ago, and Wallner was involved in a new relationship.

Peter Wallner

Wallner, who was born in Germany, sold the house for around £200,000.

"Surrey Police were called by a woman at around 3:20pm on Saturday, after a human foot was seen protruding from the bin. "Scenes of crime officers carefully emptied the bin to preserve forensic opportunities, recovering the full intact body of a white woman believed to be in her 30s, which had been surrounded by rubbish."

Wallner was recently arrested and charged with the murder of his previous wife, who hadn't been seen since the breakup.  He was not caught stuffing his wife into the wheelie bin by surveillance camera.
