Everything Is Awesome

We showed some interesting costumes in What We Pretend To Be, and while they're nothing new, we saw a variety of Lego-themed costumes. lego-block01The basic Lego block and the generic Lego man used to be the mainstays of the Lego costume set. lego-costume02 But then Lego started licensing movies and games. You can even go to a Lego store and customize a Lego figure to look like you. lego-costume04 Now there are superheroes, like the members of the Justice League lego-costume05 Famous pop stars like The Village People lego-costume06 Whoever these guys are (we were afraid to ask) lego-costume07 Even if its a Lego zombie. lego-costume08 Some costumes take less effort than others. boba Caillen Sheppard loves Legos. He has an extensive collection including a large number of Star Wars pieces. The seven year old from Ontario wanted to be Lego Boba Fett, and his father, Keith Sheppard, 41, tackled the job with enthusiasm. lego-boba01 Much of the suit, which took about 100 hours to build, was made from Sintra, a rigid, lightweight PVC. Insulation foam board was used to make the dome shape of the helmet, and the rocket tips and exhausts were constructed from Plastazote, a closed cell foam. The graphics were cut from adhesive vinyl, applied over the paint, and then clear coated for durability. lego-boba05   The attention to detail, compared to the original Lego creation, is amazing. And like the Lego creation, the antenna and backpack are removable. lego-boba03 It's no surprise that the costume took first place at the Burlington Toycon, as Keith Sheppard is a graphics designer, a long-time star wars fan, and a great father. lego-boba04

At the End of His Rope

by on Sep.07, 2014, under Crime, Culture, Education, Family, Kids, Weapons

Ten year old Tang Chu, who lives in Ghizhou, China was trying to watch his favorite cartoons when he became annoyed by a noise from outside. Tang_Chu_apt Workman Liu Mai was using his electric drill to install new lights outside the 8th floor apartment. While most ten year olds would probably be driven by curiosity, Tang Chu just wanted to stop the noise. He grabbed a knife from the kitchen, and cut the workman's safety rope. That left him dangling 100 feet up by a single rope. His workmate Zhang Pan heard his screams, and called firemen, who were able to winch Liu Mai to safety on the 11th floor. liumai2 Tang Chu said that the builders were too loud and it was distracting him as he tried to watch his favorite cartoons. He has since apologized for his actions. Father Tang Peng said, "He just didn't think. We have apologized and bought the man a new rope." liumai3 "We also gave him a good talking too and explained what he did was very dangerous. "He has promised he will not do something similar again. I think we may also need to take him for some anger management therapy." Just make sure the therapist keeps his voice down.

Waist Deep In The Big Muddy

by on Jul.08, 2014, under Environment, Family, Health, Kids, Nature, Parenting, Recreation

It's been more than 10 years since five year old Lelaina Hall died after being trapped in the mud at Berrow Beach, Somerset in 2002. mudflat_danger People, especially kids, ignore the posted warnings to play in the mud. mudflat_rescue Emergency crews had already been called out several times to rescue people stuck in the mud. But like the others, this young boy ran out to enjoy the mudflats exposed during low tide at Weston-super-Mare in Somerset to the consternation of his mother. mudboy3 All of the stuck children were located and rescued that day, although one seven year old boy had to be checked out by an ambulance crew. Roger Fry, who lives in the area, was attending Weston Air Day when he snapped these photos. mudboy2 He said, "I was on the beach watching the planes when I heard this great ruckus. I looked round and saw this mother screaming at a kid." "I told you not to go down there, you're filthy" and so on. "Everyone stopped and looked around before the mother stormed off with some other children towards the car park. The muddy kid just followed on a little later." mudboy1 The unidentified young boy was berated by his mother, and was seen bursting into tears as the furious woman wagged her finger in front of his face. "Everyone stopped and looked around before the mother stormed off with some other children towards the car park. The muddy kid just followed on a little later." reported Fry.

"I want to play cricket on the green,

Ride my bike across the street,

Cut myself and see my blood,

I want to come home all covered in mud."

Dead of Night

by on Jul.07, 2014, under Crime, Family, Health

Politics make strange bedfellows, and so does a successful marriage. When Marcel H died at the age of 79, his 69 year old widow was devastated. She wanted him to remain at her side, so she didn't report the death. marcelh01 It is believed that he died from an asthma attack in November 2012. His doting wife continued to sleep with the corpse despite the smell of decomposition. marcelh02 Neighbors didn't report any unusual odors, but authorities were called after the landlord claimed that the couple hadn't paid their rent since 2012. When they entered the apartment, they found Marcel's mummified remains. marcelh03 Philippe Boxho, pathologist at the Forensic Center of Liege explained,“A body can mummify in a dry, warm environment. It takes at least a week to reach such a state. In this case the body had rotten in the bed and his internal organs had melted and liquefied.” marcelh04 “This liquid would have spread and the bed would have been swarming with insects as the body rotted, this would have been a real shame. Even though the smell of human decay is quite specific, many people equate that smell to the smell of garbage and once the body has become rotten the smell does decrease significantly.” death_maiden “This is not the first time I have made a discovery of this kind, I've been faced with two or three other occasions where people have continued to sleep with the corpse of their partner.” said Boxho.

Indian Folk Tail

by on Jul.07, 2014, under Culture, Family, Health, Kids, Nature, Religion

In our article Tales of Woe,  we discussed caudal appendages,  which look much like a tail. While they can usually be removed surgically, there are some sufferers, like Xiao Wei, who cannot have the surgery and must learn to live with it. xw_tail Not everyone considers a tail to be a detriment, even when it affects their ability to live a normal life. arshid01 Arshid Ali Khan, from the Indian state of Punjab, is unable to walk and has to use a wheelchair to get around. Locals consider him to be a reincarnation of the Hindu monkey god Hanuman; they refer to him as बालाजी, or Balaji. hanuman01 Arshid said, "This tail has been given to me by god. I am worshipped because I pray to god and the wishes of people come true." arshid02 Arshid lives with his grandfather, Iqbal Qureshi, and two uncles since his father died when he was four. His mother has since remarried. arshid04 Arshid's home has become a temple where his devotees come to visit him to receive his blessings and touch his tail. arshid03 “A lot of people’s wishes have come true after they have visited,” claimed Mr Qureshi, a local music teacher. “Sometimes there are childless couples who come to Balaji for help. He blesses them, and often they are then able to conceive.” arshid06 Despite his status as a god, Arshid needs a wheelchair to get around, and his condition is yet undiagnosed. arshid07 He is due to see a doctor who may be able to successfully remove the tail, but his family says they would rather he keep the tail than risk an operation. arshid08 Mr. Qureshi says that it's Balaji's decision. Arshid does not believe that the amputation of his tail will keep the crowds from flocking to his house for his blessings. "Doctors can remove my tail," he said, "but people will continue to believe in me."
